A new home for The Sports Hall of Fame

The New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame exhibition in Dunedin is now closed while we prepare for an exciting move north. Later this year the exhibition will re-open inside the Grassroots Trust Velodrome in Cambridge, marking the start of an exciting new chapter for visitors and fans
Waimarama Taumaunu
Inducted in 1996
“Wai”, as she is universally known, was only in her mid-teens when she entered representative netball for Canterbury and by 1981, she was in the national team.
Sporting Category:
  • Netball
Through the 80s, she formed an accomplished defence pairing with goalkeep Tracy Fear, a combination that greatly contributed to New Zealand’s world championship win in 1987. Captain from 1989 to 1991, Taumaunu was physically imposing on the court and had instinctive flair combined with a great appreciation of strategy.

Her final international was in what was regarded as one of the best international netball matches, a one-goal loss to Australia in the 1991 world championship final.

Onny Parun

(1947 - )

It’s not too often that modern sports people admit to answering the call of Queen and country first, but that’s what Onny Parun did in 1975 when he chose to play for New Zealand in a Davis Cup tie instead of playing in a tournament in Holland.
