Under Alert Level 1, the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame is now OPEN. Our hours are 10am to 3pm (Wednesdays to Sundays). We are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays (open by appointment only on these days).
Daniel Reese
Inducted in 1997
Regarded as the father of cricket in New Zealand, he was the first truly international cricketer to be produced by New Zealand.

Reese played for New Zealand from 1899 to 1914 and captained the side for nine of those years.

A left-hand batsman, he scored 755 runs and took 22 wickets with his slow-medium left-arm deliveries.

He also played in Melbourne and in England for W G Grace’s London County team and Essex.

He was a national selector for several years and for 30 years was a member of the Cricket Council, being at various times chairman, president and a life member.

He was the driving force behind the New Zealand teams to England in 1927 and 1931.

As a youngster at school in Invercargill, Jeff Wilson was a wonder of his age on the sporting field, whether rugby, cricket or, so it seemed, anything else he tried.
