He captained New Zealand in their first test, in 1930, led New Zealand on their tours of England in 1927 and 1931 and managed the third tour, in 1937. He was also a national selector and president of the New Zealand Cricket Council. Lowry scored 18 first-class centuries and averaged 31 over his 20-year career. He was also an able wicketkeeper and became known as an innovative captain with a flair for the unexpected. Lowry was once described as a “man more given to command than obey”.
