The New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame exhibition in Dunedin is now closed while we prepare for an exciting move north. Later this year the exhibition will re-open inside the Grassroots Trust Velodrome in Cambridge, marking the start of an exciting new chapter for visitors and fans

John Kirwan
Inducted in 2012
John Kirwan was one of the most devastating wing threequarters to play rugby for New Zealand; when in top form, he was an irresistible try-scorer as his 35 tries in 63 test matches indicates (plus another 32 tries in non-test matches).

He was famously playing third grade club rugby when he was first chosen for Auckland in 1983 and thereafter his progress was meteoric. “JK,” as he was popularly known, was first chosen for the All Blacks in 1984 and he adorned the international game for the next decade.

Kirwan was one of the key figures in 1987 when New Zealand won the first World Cup and he scored an end-to-end try against Italy in the opening match that electrified the tournament.

He played a total of 96 matches for New Zealand.
