Murray Halberg
Inducted in 1990
Sir Murray Halberg is one of the outstanding figures in New Zealand sport.
Sporting Category:
  • Athletics
His achievements alone would have ensured his place in New Zealand sport, but he built on those by forming the Murray Halberg Trust for Crippled Children (now the Halberg Trust) and resuscitating the Sportsman of the Year awards, which now bear his name.

Halberg won the three miles at the Cardiff and Perth Empire Games and the 5000 metres at the Olympics in Rome. In 1958 he was the first New Zealander to run a mile in under four minutes and in 1961 he broke three world records (two miles, four by one mile relay and three miles) in the space of 19 days.

His athletics career was characterised by grit and courage and his later career has been characterised by a dedication to children who could not aspire to what he had been.

He was knighted in 1988.

Sporting Spotlight

Norman Read

(1931 - 1994)

For older New Zealanders, the lasting image of the Melbourne Olympics in 1956 is of the smiling face of Norman Read as he strode into the Melbourne Cricket Ground to win the 50km walk, one of two gold medals won by New Zealanders in Melbourne.
