He was the first New Zealander to play 300 first-grade NRL matches and when he retired his fifty-five tests for New Zealand were the most by any player for any country. He memorably led the Kiwis in their 24-0 win against Australia in the 2005 Tri-Nations, the first time for twenty years the Kiwis had stopped the Kangaroos from scoring.
