A new home for The Sports Hall of Fame

The New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame exhibition in Dunedin is now closed while we prepare for an exciting move north. Later this year the exhibition will re-open inside the Grassroots Trust Velodrome in Cambridge, marking the start of an exciting new chapter for visitors and fans
Jonah Lomu
Inducted in 2014
Jonah Lomu was a player beyond the normal measures of achievement in sport. They were for other people; Lomu was unique.
Sporting Category:
  • Rugby Union
Whatever level of rugby he played, it always seemed the same – with ball in hand and the tryline in sight, even sometimes 60 or 70 metres distant, the result was almost inevitable. Opposing schoolboys watched in awe; not too many years later, the best rugby players in the world did the same.

Lomu was a wonder of his age. His fame catapulted around the world, even to areas where rugby was a foreign sport, after his extraordinary performances at the World Cup in 1995.

But Lomu knew the depths as well as the heights; struck down by a crippling kidney disease, and even after a kidney transplant, he continued in the game he graced and loved.

Regarded by many as the epitome of the hard, rugged New Zealand rugby forward, Colin Meads's international career lasted from 1957 until 1971 and he continued playing first-class rugby for another two years after that.
