Duncan Laing
Inducted in 2005
Duncan Laing’s sporting exploits began in Taranaki where he was a strong and effective surf lifesaver – he captained the New Zealand team against Australia - and was a lock for the provincial rugby team.
Sporting Category:
  • Swimming
For 40 or so years, Duncan trained swimmers at Moana Pool and filled coaching roles for Olympic and Commonwealth Games teams between 1974 and 2000.

He turned good swimmers into champions – including the best New Zealand swimmer of them all, Danyon Loader, winner of two gold medals at the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996 to surpass the silver he had won four years before in Barcelona.

Almost every day of those 40 years, in the pre-dawn, Duncan was poolside encouraging, cajoling, instructing the swimmers in his care.

New Zealand swimming had not seen his like before.
