By the time she was 17, Philippa Gould’s swimming career was behind her but she’d already earned herself enduring fame in New Zealand sport.

Gould, who competed at the 1956 Olympic Games as a 15-year-old, set world records for the 220 yards and 200 metres backstroke at the Newmarket pool in Auckland.

The following year, she added the world 110 yards and 100 metres records and remains the only New Zealander to set world long-course swimming records.

She was an early favourite for gold at the Empire Games in Cardiff in 1958 but a broken leg set back her training.

She was still good enough to return from Cardiff with a bronze, however.
