COVID-19 Level 1 Update

Under Alert Level 1, the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame is now OPEN. Our hours are 10am to 3pm (Wednesdays to Sundays). We are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays (open by appointment only on these days).
Bob Skelton
Inducted in 1995
During a career crammed with honours, Bob Skelton rode 2129 winners. His first two-mile winner was Lancaster in the 1954 Great Autumn Handicap and 30 years later, he was still among the leading jockeys.

Skelton’s greatest win was when he rode Van Der Hum to win the Melbourne Cup in 1976, but there were many other stunning triumphs, including five Wellington Cups, two Auckland Cups and three New Zealand Cups. He won the riders’ premiership in New Zealand nine times.

Skelton was based in Australia later in his career and when he retired from riding, he continued successfully as a trainer.
