After success in long-distance races in New Zealand and Australia, he turned to solo challenges and in 1984 became the first person to complete a double crossing of Cook Strait.

He achieved the first Lake Taupo double crossing (84km) in 1984 and followed that with a double crossing of the English Channel (70km).

He then swam the English Channel each way and made two more double crossings – all in record time – before his career highlight, a triple crossing, during which he broke five Channel records. He covered the 140km in 28 hours 21 minutes.
