Allison Roe
Inducted in 2010
Allison Roe was many things to many people during her stunning athletics career, but she was best known in New Zealand and internationally for winning the famed Boston and New York Marathons in the same year, 1981.
Sporting Category:
  • Athletics
She not only won, she set course records in both.

In New York, she beat the time of the great Norwegian, Grete Waitz, and in so doing gave women’s marathons a new international face.

For two years, she was the fastest woman marathon runner in the world. But she was much more than “just” a marathon runner of outstanding ability.

She competed on the track, the road and the crosscountry course for New Zealand and won national titles in cycling and triathlon as well.

Allison has been voted New Zealand Sportsman of the Year, Best Female Runner in the World and Best Female Athlete in the World.

Cecil Matthews

(1914 - 1987)

There could have been no greater praise for Matthews than to be dubbed “the Nurmi of the Empire” after the great Finn, Paavo Nurmi, who dominated middle and long-distance running in the 1920s.
