Chris Lewis
Inducted in 1996
For nine years, Chris Lewis was New Zealand’s leading tennis player and among many fine moments in his career, there was none finer than the magical fortnight in 1983 when he played his way through to the final at Wimbledon.
Sporting Category:
  • Tennis
That performance stamped him as the best since Anthony Wilding.

Lewis began that Wimbledon by eliminating ninth seed Steve Denton, then beating Brod Dyke, Mike Bauer, Nduka Odizor, Mel Purcell and, in a gripping five-set semifinal, Kevin Curren.

A straight sets loss in the final to John McEnroe detracted not one whit from Lewis’s achievement.

He’d won Junior Wimbledon eight years previously and among other successes were three grand prix tournaments and playing a major part in taking New Zealand to the Davis Cup semifinals in 1982.

They were described, by 1905 hooker George Tyler no less, as the weakest team New Zealand had fielded.
