Don Jowett
Inducted in 2017
Don Jowett became the only New Zealand track sprinter to win a gold medal at a major games when he won the 220 yards at the Empire Games in Vancouver in 1954.
Sporting Category:
  • Athletics
There to watch him was a former New Zealand champion sprinter, Charlie Jenkins, who called him magnificent and said: “He was immaculate, strong, confident.”

Fittingly, Jowett received his gold medal from Sir Arthur Porritt, who in 1924 became the only New Zealander to win an Olympic sprint medal.

But Jowett’s race was not run after the 220. He also ran in the 440 yards, in which he claimed the silver medal behind a future Olympic silver medallist, Kevan Gosper.
