Maurice Holmes

(1908 - 1998)

Maurice Holmes
In a sporting career that spanned six decades, Morrie Holmes became the greatest driver in New Zealand harness racing that the sport has seen.

He won the national drivers’ premiership on 18 occasions between 1931 and 1974 and had a total of 1666 wins in his long career.

They included three New Zealand Cups, two Auckland Cups and two Interdominion championship finals, plus numerous wins in lesser events, including 12 New Zealand Derbies. Holmes’s star did not fade with age.

In his second-last season, he had a record 88 winners and in his last, when he was forced to retire at the age of 65, he extended that record to 93.
