He was the first New Zealander to ride 1000 winners and his final figure of 1062 still puts him among the best. Ellis won the premiership four times and was second on another three occasions. He also trained 79 winners. He was the first to train and ride a New Zealand Cup winner and had an outstanding record in major races. He won the New Zealand Cup five times, the Wellington Cup three times, the Auckland Cup twice. He also won the New Zealand Derby five times and the Great Northern Derby twice. Ellis rode and trained Golden Souvenir in the 1945-46 season to win the New Zealand and Wellington Gold Cups and trained an offspring of Golden Souvenir, Gold Scheme, to win the New Zealand St Leger, the New Zealand Cup and the Sydney Cup.
