Martin Crowe

(1962 - 2016)

Martin Crowe
New Zealand has produced some fine batsmen, among them Bert Sutcliffe, Martin Donnelly and Stewie Dempster, but knowledgeable judges rate Martin Crowe the best of them all.

He graced New Zealand cricket for more than a decade, playing in 77 tests and 143 one-day internationals.

His hallmarks were grace and skill and it was once written of him: "His imprint on New Zealand cricket is indelible with courage unquestioned, ability undoubted and performance unparalleled." Crowe's 5444 test runs - the most by a New Zealander at the time - and 4704 runs in one-day internationals are the statistical testimony to his greatness; but figures alone cannot do justice to a player of such quality.

His 299 against Sri Lanka in 1991 is the second-highest test score by a New Zealander.
