He started in 96 of them, but his best results were three seconds and his best overall placing for the world drivers’ title was fourth in 1967. The French Grand Prix in 1972 was his for the taking when he punctured. Amon’s career was explicit evidence that the best drivers only can win in Formula One if they’ve also got the best cars and when he raced for teams such as Ferrari and March, they didn’t. Amon won Formula One grand prix in Britain and Argentina, but not when they were world championship races. Away from Formula One, he also had wins at Le Mans (in 1966 with Bruce McLaren), Daytona and Monza. Return to the Inductee list
